Los Cristianos
The unique town of Los Cristianos with its beautiful square in front of the fishing harbour, charming streets and great local shops. In this post we will tell you about this southern town
Los Cristianos - the centre of South Tenerife
It doesn't matter how you travel and what you travel on, but if you are in Tenerife you will definitely visit this unique town.
A bit of history
The first mentions of Los Cristianos date back to the 16th century, when there was a fishing village on the site of the current city. In those days, when there were no fortifications, the south of the island was subject to regular pirate raids. As a result of this and harsher climatic conditions, the south, compared to the north, developed much more slowly. And only from the mid-19th century, when industry and agriculture began to develop, Los Cristianos became the main port of the southern part of the island.⠀
“The rown began to change in the late 19th century, when pirates ceased to be a threat..”
The first pier was built only in 1909, which significantly increased trade turnover, and at the same time strengthened the economy of the municipality.
・In 1934, work was carried out to expand the port area, due to the increasingly developing fishing industry and commercial routes with the rest of the islands of the archipelago. ⠀
・In 1975, daily ferry services were introduced between Tenerife and La Gomera, and it was from this moment that the city switched from agricultural and fishing industries to tourism.
Currently, Los Cristianos has 22 thousand inhabitants, and is the center of the tourist zone, together with Las Americas and Adeje, receiving more than 5 million tourists from all over the world every year!
